Abstract
During the 1840s, the American Fourierists identified themselves as a "third voice" ; in the intense debate over American social development, rejecting bothe the free-labor system northern capitalism and the slave-labor system of the Southern in favor of a cooperative "Second American Revolution" ;. Despite its surprising influence, this Fourierist challenge was defeated by the failure of its communal experiments anti its absorption into the anti-slavery crusade that brought on the Civil War.
