One of the most mysterious features of Fourier’s final work, La Fausse Industrie, is its seemingly extravagant claims concerning the « phalanges agricoles » established by the Paraguayan dictator, Dr José Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia (1766-1840). This article considers the question of Fourier’s knowledge of Francia and his agricultural reforms, and presents a letter which shows the genesis of Fourier’s interest in « la méthode sociale de Francia ».
