Abstract
The Texas colony of Réunion was meant to be a joint French and American venture, which would culminate two decades of transatlantic Fourierist agitation. But by the time Considerant decided upon a New World experiment, the American phalansterian movement had collapsed and could provide little support. Moreover, in confronting the question of slavery and in setting up Réunion’s practical arrangements, French Fourierists committed many of the same mistakes that had brought failure to the Americans in the preceding decade.
