Abstract
Eye-witness accounts, only available from men and indirectly through women’s descendants, illustrate dramatic contrast between the Fourierist-proclaimed role of equality for women with actual life at La Réunion. Under Napoleon III, women fourierists shared indirectly the brunt of republican politics their men experienced, then as colonists the harsh conditions of the Texas frontier, and finally Southern politics - never did they share power and decision-making. Of Reunion colonists, only Clarisse Vigoureux, one progenerator of the movement, rose above the subservient role the assigned to women with a literary challenge to men - but during her earlier life in Europe before her American experience.
